Craig A. Rosen, Ph.D.
Executive Chairman, Chief Scientific Officer and Founder
Craig A. Rosen, Ph.D. joined CoGenesys at its inception. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Dr. Rosen was President and Chief Scientific Officer and a member of the Board of Directors for Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (HGS). Dr. Rosen was a founding scientist at HGS and from 1993-2004 held various executive positions including Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Research and Development where he was responsible for drug discovery, development and manufacturing activities. During Dr. Rosen’s tenure at the company, HGS advanced 14 drugs into human clinical trials. He has also been inventor on approximately 300 issued patents and has authored over 125 scientific publications. Prior to joining HGS, Dr. Rosen was Chairman of the Department of Gene Regulation at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology. Dr. Rosen received his Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Rosen has served on the Boards of Vascular Genetics, Inc. (now Corautus Genetics), the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) and the Scientific Advisory Boards for the Institute of Human Virology and the Wistar Institute.
Steven C. Mayer, MBA
Chief Executive Officer and Founder
Steven C. Mayer joined CoGenesys at its inception. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Mr. Mayer was the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Human Genome Sciences, Inc. He joined HGS as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in September 1996, and has since served as a member of the Management Committee. While at HGS, Mr. Mayer raised over $3 billion in equity, debt, and facilities financing. Prior to joining HGS, from 1995 to 1996, he was Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of GenVec, Inc., an early-stage gene therapy company. From 1991 to 1995 he served as Vice President & Chief Financial Officer and as Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer of TheraTech, Inc., a leading drug delivery company. Prior to joining TheraTech, Mr. Mayer was involved in the formation of Myriad Genetics and was CFO of another early stage biotech company, NPI. He also has had experience in investment banking with Smith Barney and in corporate finance with Martin Marietta Corporation. Mr. Mayer serves on the NASDAQ Issuer Affairs Committee and on the FASB Small Business Advisory Committee. Mr. Mayer holds an MBA degree from Stanford University and a B.A. degree, cum laude, with honors in Economics from Williams College.
Indra Sanyal, Ph.D.
Chief Technology Officer and Founder
Indra Sanyal, Ph.D. joined CoGenesys as the Chief Technology Officer at its inception. Dr. Sanyal is responsible for all product development efforts to support both internal pipeline and outlicensing opportunities. Prior to this, Dr. Sanyal held the position of Vice President, Process Development at Human Genome Sciences, where he was responsible for directing process development efforts for all HGS products from Phase 1 through BLA filing. Dr. Sanyal joined Human Genome Sciences as a Scientist in 1997 and was promoted to Associate Director in 1998 to manage a newly created High-Throughput Biological Screening department. Since then, Dr. Sanyal advanced through a succession of senior R&D management positions and established and managed groups ranging from early discovery to late development. Before joining HGS, Dr. Sanyal was responsible for developing high-throughput screening methods to discover industrial enzymes from extremophilic microorganisms at Diversa, Inc. As an early employee in a start-up biotechnology company, Dr. Sanyal played a critical role in setting up Diversa. Dr. Sanyal began his industrial career in 1992 as a Visiting Scientist with DuPont, where he discovered novel pathways to vitamin biosynthesis. Dr. Sanyal obtained his Ph.D. in Bioinorganic Chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University and a M.Sc. in Chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Dr. Sanyal has a number of publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a co-author on multiple issued patents.
Mark A. Rampy, Ph.D., MBA
Chief Business Officer and Founder
Mark A. Rampy. Ph.D. joined CoGenesys at its inception. Dr. Rampy is responsible for all aspects of Business Development, Licensing and Strategic Marketing for CoGenesys. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Dr. Rampy was Vice President of Business Development at Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGS). Dr. Rampy joined HGS in 1995 and has held various positions in the Strategic Drug Development Group from 1995-1998 where he played a critical role in HGS first IND filings and initial clinical trials. From 1998 through 2006, he has held various positions in Strategic Marketing and Business Development. During Dr. Rampy’s time in business development he was responsible for leading the identification and evaluation of potential partnerships and business opportunities, structuring and negotiation of transactions and the management of HGS corporate partnerships and strategic alliances. During his tenure at HGS, Dr. Rampy was a driving force in forging partnerships potentially worth over $750M in funding to HGS including the $507M partnership with Novartis for Albuferon™, and the $183M collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline for the development of Albugon™. In addition, Dr. Rampy has extensive experience in life sciences transactions including product and technology outlicensing, technology in-licensing, biopharmaceutical manufacturing and supply agreements, and alliance management. Dr. Rampy holds an MBA degree from Georgetown University, a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology from the University of Michigan and a B.A. degree with a double major in Chemistry and Economics/Business Administration from Kalamazoo College.
Martha A. Reitman, MD
Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs
Martha A. Reitman, M.D. joined Cogenesys as Senior Vice President, Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs. Dr. Reitman also serves as President and CEO of Reitman Corporation, a company providing worldwide strategic development and regulatory/clinical support to companies developing novel therapeutics and medical devices. Prior to joining Cogenesys, Dr. Reitman held numerous positions including Vice President, Strategic Development for Human Genome Sciences, Inc, Acting Vice President for Boston Scientific, Medical Director and Director, Clinical Research, Pre- Clinical Research, & Regulatory Affairs at Advanced Cardiovascular Systems (ACS), the Guidant Corporation, and Regulatory Director and Clinical Medical Associate Director at Syntex Corporation. Dr. Reitman received her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University, Doctor of Medicine degree from SUNY Upstate Medical Center and completed her residency at Stanford University. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics, and has served as a member of the Cardio-Renal Division, FDA research CRADA Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Medifacts Research Foundation.
Alain D. Cappeluti
Chief Financial Officer
Alain D. Cappeluti joined CoGenesys in 2006 as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Mr. Cappeluti was Vice President of Financial Operations of Human Genome Sciences, Inc. He joined HGS in 1992 as Controller and was involved in the formation and initial public offering of HGS. He was responsible for all of the company’s accounting and purchasing functions and played a key role in HGS’s financial management from inception to 2006 including significant contributions to many financing transactions. Prior to joining HGS from 1986 to 1992 he was Director of Planning and Analysis of BioReliance, Inc. and spent ten years in public accounting from 1977 to 1986. Mr. Cappeluti is the past Chariman of the 2005 annual conference and the Regional Coordinator of the Baltimore/ Washington chapter of the Association of Bioscience Financial Officers, Mr. Cappeluti earned his B.A. degree in accounting at Old Dominion University and received his Virginia Certified Public Accountant accreditation in 1980.
Viktor Roschke, Ph.D.
Executive Director, Pharmacology and Clinical Assays
Viktor Roschke, Ph.D. joined CoGenesys at its inception. At CoGenesys, Dr. Roschke oversees development and characterization of lead product candidates to support both internal pipeline and outlicensing opportunities. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Dr. Roschke held the position of Director, Clinical Immunology at Human Genome Sciences, where he was responsible for directing the development and implementation of GLP-compliant assays in support of all HGS pre-clinical and clinical programs. Prior to this, Dr. Roschke was Associate Director in the Antibody Development Department responsible for identification and characterization of new therapeutic antibody candidates. Dr. Roschke joined Human Genome Sciences as a Scientist in 1997 from National Cancer Institute, where he studied the mechanisms of development of B-cell malignancies. Prior to his move to United States in 1992, Dr. Roschke held several positions at the Novosibirsk Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including Head of Laboratory of Immunochemistry and Scientific Director of an affiliated biotech company BioSAN. Dr. Roschke received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Novosibirsk Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and his MS in Biochemistry from Novosibirsk University, Russia. He has published over 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has 13 issued patents.
Adam Bell, Ph.D.
Director, Scientific Affairs
Adam Bell, Ph.D. joined CoGenesys at its inception. At CoGenesys, Dr. Bell manages internal and external scientific activities for development and licensing of new products. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Dr. Bell held the position of Senior Scientist II, Preclinical Discovery at Human Genome Sciences, where he led programs through all stages of preclinical development from discovery to lead selection, validation, IND and licensing. He brings both experience and a spirit of innovation to the company. Prior to joining HGS, Adam was a postdoctoral fellow and recipient of the Fellows Award for Research Excellence at the National Institutes of Health. His groundbreaking work in genetics led to publications in the prestigious journals of Cell, Science, and Nature. Dr. Bell received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from SUNY at Stony Brook and his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from SUNY at Buffalo.
