BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 

James Barrett, Ph.D.
Jim Barrett joined NEA in 2001 as a General Partner. He specializes in biotechnology
and works with members of NEA's healthcare investment group on medical devices,
healthcare information systems and healthcare services companies. Present board
memberships include CoGenesys, GlycoMimetics, Inhibitex, Inc. (NASDAQ: INHX),
Iomai Corporation, Nucleonics, Inc., Peptimmune, Inc., Pharmion Corporation
(NASDAQ: PHRM), Ruxton Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Sensors for Medicine and Science,
Supernus Pharmaceuticals, Targacept, and he also serves on the board of MedImmune.
Prior to NEA, Jim served as Founder/Chairman/CEO of Sensors for Medicine and
Science (1997 - 2001) where he remains Chairman. Prior to that, he was Chairman/CEO
of Genetic Therapy (1987 - 1995), President/CEO of Life Technologies (1985 - 1987),
and President/CEO of Bethesda Research Labs (1982 - 1983). Prior to 1982, Jim worked
in various divisions of SmithKline. NEA and Jim have worked together since 1982 when
he was recruited to run Bethesda Research Laboratories, which merged with Life
Technologies. NEA then backed Jim at Genetic Therapy and later at Sensors for
Medicine and Science. Jim received a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of
Tennessee, his MBA from the University of Santa Clara, and a BS in Chemistry from
Boston College.
Bradley G. Lorimier
Brad Lorimier is an independent consultant to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology
industries. Mr. Lorimier has served in leadership positions in both the pharmaceutical and
biotechnology industries, including as Vice President of Licensing and Vice President of
Corporate Development at Johnson & Johnson and as Senior Vice President and Director
of Human Genome Sciences. He is currently on the board of directors of Invitrogen
Corporation, CoGenesys and Avalon Pharmaceuticals, where he is also a co-founder. Mr.
Lorimier was a director of Matrix Pharmaceutical, Inc. from December 1997 to March
2002. He received his B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1967.
Steven C. Mayer
Steve Mayer is CEO and a founder of CoGenesys. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Mr.
Mayer was the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Human Genome
Sciences, Inc. He joined HGS as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in
September 1996, and has since served as a member of the Management Committee.
While at HGS, Mr. Mayer raised over $3 billion in equity, debt, and facilities financing.
Prior to joining HGS, from 1995 to 1996, he was Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer of GenVec, Inc., an early-stage gene therapy company. From 1991 to 1995 he
served as Vice President & Chief Financial Officer and as Senior Vice President & Chief
Financial Officer of TheraTech, Inc., a leading drug delivery company. Prior to joining
TheraTech, Mr. Mayer was involved in the formation of Myriad Genetics and was CFO
of another early stage biotech company, NPI. He also has had experience in investment
banking with Smith Barney and in corporate finance with Martin Marietta Corporation.
Mr. Mayer serves on the NASDAQ Issuer Affairs Committee and on the FASB Small
Business Advisory Committee. Mr. Mayer holds an MBA degree from Stanford
University and a B.A. degree, cum laude, with honors in Economics from Williams
College.
Charles (Chuck) Newhall
Charles (Chuck) Newhall is a Co-Founder and General Partner of NEA. His investment
activities focus on healthcare services, healthcare information services and
biopharmaceutical companies. His board memberships include CoGenesys, ElderHealth,
Hospital Partners of America, Sensors for Medicine & Science, TargetRx, Trine
Pharmaceuticals, Vela Pharmaceuticals, and Vitae Pharmaceuticals. His prior board
memberships include among others, AMERIGROUP, Caremark, Chomerics, Genetic
Therapy, Life Technologies, PatientKeeper, Russ Pharmaceuticals, Scandipharm,
Sepracor, Surgical Health, and Zymark Corporation. He is Founder of the Mid-Atlantic
Venture Association. Before co-founding NEA, Chuck was a Vice President with T.
Rowe Price Associates and Vice President of their New Horizons Fund. He received his
MBA from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business and his BA in English
Literature with honors from the University of Pennsylvania.
Craig A. Rosen, Ph.D.
Craig Rosen is Executive Chairman, Chief Scientific Officer and a founder of
CoGenesys. Prior to joining CoGenesys, Dr. Rosen was President and Chief Scientific
Officer and a member of the Board of Directors for Human Genome Sciences, Inc.
(HGS). Dr. Rosen was a founding scientist at HGS and from 1993-2004 held various
executive positions including Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of
Research and Development where he was responsible for drug discovery, development
and manufacturing activities. During Dr. Rosen's tenure at the company, HGS advanced
14 drugs into human clinical trials. He has also been inventor on approximately 300
issued patents and has authored over 125 scientific publications. Prior to joining HGS,
Dr. Rosen was Chairman of the Department of Gene Regulation at the Roche Institute of
Molecular Biology. Dr. Rosen received his Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. in
Microbiology from the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Rosen has served on the Boards
of Vascular Genetics, Inc. (now Corautus Genetics), the American Foundation for AIDS
Research (AmFAR) and the Scientific Advisory Boards for the Institute of Human
Virology and the Wistar Institute.
Michael B. Sheffery, Ph.D.
Michael B. Sheffery is a founding General Partner of OrbiMed and Co-Head of Private
Equity. Dr. Sheffery was formerly Head of the Laboratory of Gene Structure and
Expression at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He received both his Ph.D. in
Molecular Biology and his B.A. in Biology from Princeton University. Dr. Sheffery
joined Mehta and Isaly in 1996 as a Senior Analyst covering the biotechnology industry.
He is currently a Director of Biosynexus Incorporated, Eximias Pharmaceuticals and
CoGenesys, Inc. and was formerly a Director of Biosynexus, Memory Pharmaceuticals,
and NeoGenesis Pharmaceuticals.
David C. U'Prichard, Ph.D.
Dr. David C. U'Prichard currently serves as a President of Druid Consulting LLC, consulting to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and as a Venture Partner at Red Abbey Venture Partners (Baltimore) and Care Capital LLC (Princeton). From 1997 to 1999, Dr. U'Prichard served as Chairman of Research and Development at SmithKline Beecham. Prior to SmithKline Beecham, he worked for ICI/Zeneca as Executive Vice President and International Research Director. Dr. U'Prichard was instrumental in the launch of Nova Pharmaceuticals, Baltimore MD in 1983, following an academic career as Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Neurobiology at Northwestern University Medical School. Dr. U'Prichard received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Kansas, and his B.S. in Pharmacology with first-class honors from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He has held academic appointments at Northwestern University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania and is an Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow. He has authored more than 100 primary and review publications, was a founding co-editor of Molecular Neurobiology and co-editor of Epinephrine in the Central Nervous System. Dr. U'Prichard is Chairman of the Board of Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Oxagen Ltd and serves on the Board of Directors of Invitrogen Corp , SMART Biosciences, Inc. and SR Pharma PLC. Dr.U’Prichard was Chairman of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Association from 2004-2005. Dr. U’Prichard is a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton, is a Trustee of the International House of Philadelphia and is on the Board of the Bioethics Institute of the University of Pennsylvania.
